Transplant Games of America

We feel so blessed and honored to have been able to participate in the Transplant Games of America this year. It was an incredible experience and made me fall in love with my heart throb all over again as I watched him compete his heart out with other transplant recipients who share stories as equally amazing as his.

Mike's transplant story (for those that don't know): When Mike was only 18 months old, he lost his first kidney to cancer (neuroblastoma). He received chemotherapy and radiation at that time and was able to make a full recovery. However, when he was 18 years old he was diagnosed with cancer again (renal cell carcinoma), this time on his other kidney. His remaining kidney was removed and he was placed on dialysis for seven months. Fortunately Mike's brother Devon was a perfect match and generously donated a kidney to help spare Mike a life on dialysis. Mike has been completely healthy and cancer-free since his transplant! His rock star of a kidney is going on 13+ years.

The Transplant Games this year took place in the beautiful city of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Team Utah/Idaho consisted of 19 athletes (living donors & recipients) and 43 supporters, including one donor family whose teenage son's donated organs saved others lives after he passed away in a roll-over accident last year. There were teams there from all around the country representing nearly every state!

Watching the over 1,000 recipients and living donors march into the opening ceremonies by state was amazing. First came the recipients who's lives have been spared because of the selfless sacrifices of others. Second came the living donors who selflessly shared a part of themselves in order to give others a second chance at life. And finally, as the crowd stood with a tearful standing ovation, came the donor families, who marched in honor of their loved ones who have passed away but in so doing saved lives through the gift of organ donation. It was such an incredible tribute to all.

Mike competed in five events and won three medals. He killed it in table tennis and won the GOLD!

His basketball team, which consisted of heart, liver and kidney transplant recipients totally rocked it and won the SILVER.

Because I'm a volleyball player, volleyball was by far my favorite event to watch. It honestly took everything I had inside of me to stay sitting on the bench and not run onto the court and play. It killed me to sit there but I restrained myself and instead put all of my energy into cheering on the team. Utah/Idaho fought hard and ended up with the BRONZE in volleyball.

Mike also competed in golf and bowling, but the competition was crazy fierce and Mike ended up not medaling in either of those events, even though he did great. The dude on the left of Mike (Stephen) got gold and the dude on the right (Rick) got bronze. Both were on Team Utah/Idaho and were incredible bowlers!

Bryson and I LOVED cheering Mike on. I nearly lost my voice from all the screaming and cheering I did throughout the week--but it was well worth it to see my man medal.

Bryson's favorite part of the games was collecting pins from all of the states that were represented. He got really good at walking up to the athletes from the other teams and asking them if they wanted to trade pins with him. He has quite the collection now. You'll also notice a buckeye hanging around his neck. When one of the players from Ohio learned he was born in Ohio, she gave him that necklace to wear. It was so cute of her and it made him feel so proud.

Bryson also loved playing with this little boy named Lucas. When we arrived at the hotel and Bryson learned there was a kid there his age, he immediately wanted to meet him, so Unky took him down to Lucas' room and Bryson invited him to the pool to play. Bryson is a rockstar when it comes to making new friends. Lucas and Bryson became best buds and were joined at the hip the entire trip.

Cute/sad/funny story: So the day Mike had his long golfing event, Bryson and I decided to spend the day exploring the city. We didn't have a car, so we planned to walk to some fun places close by. Bryson begged me to make McDonald's our first stop for breakfast, so I looked up the nearest location and we set off on our journey. It was 1.5 miles away, but that 1.5 miles ended up being mostly up hill and it was becoming a very hot morning. Our pace was pretty slow and that 1.5 miles started to feel more like 5 miles, so I suggested to Bryson that maybe we should eat somewhere a little closer to where we were instead of walking such a long way to McDonald's in the heat. He insisted that McDonald's was where he wanted to go and he was certainly determined to keep walking until we got there. So we walked and walked and sweated and sweated until finally we saw the golden arches. Unfortunately when we got up to the restaurant this picture shows what we found. I couldn't help but start laughing at how ironic it was that it was closed after all the effort we put in to get there (it really was a lot of work!) and of course poor little Bryson was heartbroken and so bummed! He had his heart set on going there and was beyond disappointed. Before turning around to start the journey back, we sat on the lawn for a couple of minutes to rest and talked about how sometimes in life there are disappointments but that it's important to always make the best of them. So as we walked back we tried to find the good in McDonald's being closed...like that it gave us good exercise, that it helped Bryson find a slug bug (he loves to look for those), that we got to see more of the beautiful city, etc. We eventually found our way to a Subway but by that time it was lunchtime, so our journey to get breakfast ended with lunch. Oh, and Bryson did finally get his long anticipated McDonald's the following day at another location. We made sure to get a ride this time.

At the closing ceremonies, Team Utah/Idaho got called onto the stage to be awarded the Team Cup Award for winning 85 total medals, which was more than any other team making them the top team in America! They received an ENORMOUS trophy!

We are grateful each day for our good health and especially Mike's good health. It is something we do not take for granted. Being married to Mike has been such a gift to me. His two-time battle with cancer has helped me cherish every moment of life I get to spend with him. Even when he does things that absolutely drive me nuts--like when he leaves his dirty dishes on the counter instead of putting them in the empty dishwasher, or when he leaves water spots all over the freshly cleaned bathroom mirror (he claims it's me, but I swear it's him!), or when he leaves sharp knives very dangerously balanced across the divider in the kitchen sink (I still cannot figure out why he does that), etc...believe it or not, I cherish each of those things and love that he's alive to drive me nuts with them. He's the man of my dreams and I feel so blessed to get to spend my life with him!

Life rules.

Go Mikey!

I am blogging from the Chicago airport right now en route to Grand Rapids, Michigan for the Transplant Games of America! I am so excited Mike decided to participate this year. I'm sure I will have much to share when we return, but for now, I just wanted post links for those interested in watching the opening and closing ceremonies live.

Opening Ceremonies will be streamed live beginning at 5:15pm (MST) on Saturday, July 28 at www.transplantgamesofamerica.org/opening-ceremony. The closing ceremonies will be July 31 at www.transplantgamesofamerica.org/closing-ceremony at the same time.

The Transplant Games coincide with the Olympics...and as my mother-in-law shared: yes, you watch the Olympics with awe and its grandeur and pomp, but watching the Opening Ceremonies of the Transplant Games is a humbling experience as a visual tribute to living donors, those who have lost their lives and their families who have donated their organs, and the athletes who have been given that second chance with the gift of life--my Mikey being one of them!

Bryson and I are excited to cheer him and his kidney on! Go Mikey!

India

Mike spent April half way around the world in Bangalore, India for work. It was a long month without him but Bryson and I somehow survived and are now so happy to have him back home with us where he belongs.

I think the biggest thing I learned while Mike was gone is that little boys need dads. Bryson LOVES to wrestle and rough house with his daddy and it was so hard for him to not have a daddy around to do that with. It was like torture for him to have to hold in all of that boy energy for so long. My brother Ike was so awesome and volunteered to come over one day to play with Bryson. Ike spent a few hours wrestling and clobbering Bryson with a Styrofoam sword and Bryson loved every second of it. So of course the first thing Bryson wanted to do with his daddy when he got home was wrestle. We're both so glad to have him home.

Here are some pictures Mike took of his trip:

P.S. Mike's kidney had its 13th birthday today in his tummy! We cracked open a can of kidney beans to celebrate. We're thankful it's still kickin'.

Kidney Kamp

Last weekend Bryson went to Kidney Kamp up at Aspen Grove with Unky & Nonni (Mike's parents). Nonni works for the National Kidney Foundation so taking the grandkids to Kidney Kamp has become a yearly tradition that Bryson always looks forward to. Since I wasn't there, I decided to have Bryson tell you about each of the pictures Unky & Nonni sent me, so here you go...

...and that about sums it up. He had such a fun time and said his favorite parts were the pirate ship and the magic trick guy.

Since Bryson was gone overnight, Mike and I took the opportunity to have a date night together. I met him at his work downtown and we went to the Salt Lake Temple to do sealings and had such a great experience there. Then we ordered take-out and came home and snuggled up to a movie together (our favorite). It felt wonderful to have an evening to ourselves. Even though the alone time was great, we sure missed our little man and made sure to let him smother us with hugs and kisses when he got home to make up for the ones he felt he didn't get to give when he left.  :)

Kidney Walk

We had a fun time Friday evening at the National Kidney Foundation Kidney Walk & Picnic held this year at Wheeler Farm. It's a neat opportunity to hear the transplant stories of others and to share Mike's story as well. We look forward to going to Kidney Kamp in a few weeks and Mike looks forward to participating in the 2012 Transplant Games in two years.

The Almighty Kidney

Today celebrates the 11th anniversary of Mike's kidney transplant. We are so thankful his kidney is still going strong and perfectly healthy! A great big thank you to Mike's brother Devon for donating such an amazingly awesome kidney.

This is a video I found recently about organ donation that was really touching. I hope it inspires you to be an organ donor if you aren't one already.

Kidney Walk 2009

On Saturday Bryson and I went to the annual Kidney Walk & Picnic with the National Kidney Foundation (NKF). Mike's mom (Nonni) works for the NKF, which is why we try to go each year....and I guess because of the fact that Mike has had a kidney transplant. :)

Bryson LOVED the bounce house and slide and flirted his heart out with a girl he met there named Ashley. She was so cute with him and he really took a liking to her! He followed her around everywhere and pretended to call her on his little play phone the rest of the day. I swear we are going to need to keep a serious eye on this kid in the future when it comes to "the ladies." I'm a little worried.

Mike planned to join us there, but was helping someone in our ward move and ended up not being able to make it. I really enjoyed visiting with people and hearing about their different kidney stories. We had a great time.
Kidneys rock.

10 Years Already?

Written by Mike. Pictures dug out of a box and posted by Erin. Mike probably won't approve of my picture selections, but he's already left for work, so they are what you get. :)

Every year on this day, I look back on my life and remember how grateful I am to my brother. Ten years ago today, at LDS hospital in Salt Lake, Devon and I went into adjoining operating rooms and both had our guts opened up. Devon donated a kidney to me and made it possible for me to pee like a man again (I hadn't peed for seven months before this.) That was one of the best feelings of my life.

This is the only picture I could find (other than the one I posted last year) of Devon and Mike together. It was taken in London a few years before the transplant.

There are many different criteria that has to be met in order for a donor's kidney to match the recipient and miraculously Devon's kidney was an absolute perfect match. It's almost like it was made for me (maybe it was).

Mike on dialysis.

If Devon hadn't donated his kidney to me, I would of had to wait a few years to receive one. That means I probably wouldn't have met Erin on our missions and our little family wouldn't exist. I can't think of anything worse. I love Erin and Bryson so much and I'm so grateful for them in my life. Thanks to Devon, I only had to be on dialysis for about seven months and his kidney has worked perfectly for 10 years. Hopefully I'll never need another transplant in my lifetime.

Mike gave this tear-drop trophy to Devon today to celebrate their 10-year.

It says " I gave my brother my kidney and all I got was this lousy trophy. Love ya Bro. Mikey May 6, 1999."

I love you Devon!

Mike

It's Erin again. I just had to post these last two pictures I found as I was digging through his box because I think he looks so dashing (a.k.a. H-O-T!!!) in them. I'm sure I'll be hearing it from Mike when he sees them. Oh well--he can kill me later. :)

In London the same time the first one above was taken.

Thanks Devon for giving me the chance to find the hottie pictured above. I will forever be grateful!

Kidney Transplant Anniversary

Nine years ago today Mike received a kidney transplant from his very generous older brother Devon. For the seven months prior to his transplant, Mike was on dialysis and felt absolutely miserable. Just 20 minutes after they put Devon's kidney in him, he peed for the first time in seven months! It was a pretty exciting moment. Thanks so much Devon for sacrificing a major organ to give Mike a life without dialysis. Transplant surgery is far harder on the donor than the recipient and we will forever be grateful to Devon for going through what he did for Mike. FYI: the longest a kidney recipient has gone so far without needing another kidney is 44 years. We hope Mike will beat that!

Mike would only let me post this picture as long as I let you know that the reason he looks like "crap" is because he had been in bed for two days and just had a major surgery...

...and yes, that is a bag of urine hanging from Mike's walker thingy. Very attractive.

To celebrate, I think I'll open a can of kidney beans for dinner. Anyone care to join us? :)

Happy Easter!

Yesterday we took Bryson to an Easter egg hunt put on by the National Kidney Foundation for families of organ donors and recipients. It was held at the Donor Memorial Park next to the Salt Lake City Library. Bryson had so much fun and got to meet the Easter bunny for the first time. After lunch, a raffle, and an Easter egg hunt, we all marched around the block with signs that said "Honk if you're an organ donor" to help promote organ donation. Mike and the other organ recipients in the group got to be the ones to carry the signs. It was also fun to find Mike's brother's name on the glass wall that was constructed as a memorial to all of the organ donors from the state of Utah. Happy Easter!

Kidney Needed -- Can You Help?

I don't know these people personally (they are a friend of one of Erin's friends) but as someone who has benefited personally from a kidney transplant, I wanted to help them spread the word. Please click here to link to their blog, read their story, and learn about what you can do to help.

9 Little Known Facts About Mikey

I've decided to do this tag about Mike for three reasons: 1- I've been tagged but hate talking about myself, 2- I'm not that interesting, and 3- There's not a whole lot on this blog about Mike so I thought it would be good to give him some face time. So here are 9 little known facts about Mike ...and just so you know, Mike would be the last one to share any of this with you:

1- His parents are the ones who did all of the Especially for Mormons books that have become so popular throughout the Mormon community.

2- He loves to brush his teeth and floss. He doesn't go anywhere without a flosser and uses them constantly. I would suspect he has one of the cleanest mouths around. Lucky me! :)

3- He has had cancer twice (neuroblastoma & renal cell carcinoma) and has more scars than anyone I know. I think Collin would agree with me that Mike's scars are super sexy.

4- Mike only has one kidney and it isn't even his! He lost his kidney's to the cancers listed above but was fortunate enough to get a kidney transplant from his very generous older brother.

5- He hates to be touched/tickled under his arms and gets really upset if you put your hand anywhere near his armpit.

6- Mike has a radio spot about him that airs in Utah on FM100 & KSL News Radio (it may be on others but those are the only two I've heard it on). His mom works for the National Kidney Foundation and did a radio spot for them where she talks about Mike and his battle with kidney cancer.

7- He loves the game of lacrosse and played on his high school lacrosse team. He's really good and is anxious for the weather to warm up again so he can practice.

8- Mike is very frugal and hates spending money on unnecessary things. In fact, the very first thing he did after we got married was pay off my credit card and car loan so that we wouldn't have any debt. He loves to save/invest his money and would rather [insert something absolutely horrible here] than have any unnecessary debt.

9- He is a huge Jack Bauer fan and secretly wants to be him.

I'm tagging all of Mike's friends whose wives have set up blogs: Brad, Cameron, Collin, Dallin, Danny, Dave, & Gary. Maybe the wives of these men can do the tag for them (about them), because if they are anything like Mike, they could probably care less about doing something like this.
